East meets West with rising star Madison Arman’s insightful combination of Japanese brush
painting, or “Sumi-e”, a method of making art using brushes and ink. As an American ex-pat
resident of Japan for over 20 years, her work exemplifies the blending of both cultures.
Inspired by her late grandfather, famous sculptor and painter, Arman, (Monte Carlo & New York),
Madison captures the essence of simplicity and concentration, exploring various hues with paint
and ink, creating her own expressive style.
An aphorism states “sumi is black and yet it is not
black,” which means that black ink in a painting suggests many things including the whole
spectrum of colors to provide optimum results for creative expression.
